As with every main Pokemon game, the main character (you) has a Rival. And again, with every main Pokemon game, you have to battle them. This guide will tell you what Pokemon your Rival will have and how to beat them.
Here is a list of the battles you will have to face against him.
Battle #1 - Route 203
Battle #2 - Hearthome City
Battle #3 - Pastoria City
Battle #4 - Canalave City
Battle #5 - Pokemon League
Battle #6 - Fight Area
Battle #1 - Route 203
This is the 1st time you would've battled your Rival. He hasn't done much but his starter Pokemon has gotten a bit of training.

This is the 2nd time you battle rival. He has Pokemon have improved but still "suck". His Pokemon are going to slightly shock you though.

This time you face your rival when chasing a Galactic Grunt. His Pokemon haven't evolved nor has he gotten any new Pokemon, but he has leveled them a bit.

When you try to cross the bridge your rival will stop you and want to battle you. He has gotten a lot better and and new Pokemon and an evolution.

You are, set and primed to face the Pokemon League when suddenly, your rival walks in to battle you. This time he has a full team of 6 Pokemon that are fully evolved and are level 48 or higher.

Every Sunday and Saturday you can go to the Fight Area and battle your rival. He hasn't got any new Pokemon but they have gone up 10-11 levels so be careful when battling him.

When you defeat the Elite 4 and enter the Hall Of Fame more then twenty times you can battle your rival again and his Pokemon's levels would've raised. You can do this till his Pokemon reach level 100 and he becomes the strongest AI Trainer in the game.
