In Every Pokemon RPG there is a group of elite trainers called Gym Leaders, these Gym Leaders are challenges trainers must overcome to become a Pokemon Master.
Roark is the first gym Leader you will face in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl he lives in Oreburgh City, he favours the Rock type pokemon, so grass and water types are extremely useful here. Once Defeated Roark will hand over the Coal Badge and TM 76 (Stealth Rock), it also allows you to use Rock Smash out of Battle.

Gardenia is the second Gym Leader in Diamond and Pearl she resides in Eterna City, She likes to use Grass Type Pokemon, Fire Flying and Bug can be very useful here so make the best of them. When Gardenia is Defeated she will give you the Forest Badge and TM 86 (Grass Knot), the badge allows you to use Cut outside of battle.

Maylene is the third Gym Leader you will face in Sinnoh, She Lives in Veilstone City and Likes to Train Fighting Pokemon, Flying and Psychic types should be used here. Maylene will hand over the Cobalt Badge and TM 60 (Drain Punch) when defeated, the badge allows the use of Fly Out of Battle.

The Fourth Gym Leader in Sinnoh is Crasher Wake, He Lives in Pastoria City and Uses Water typed Pokemon, when fighting against Wake Grass and Electric types are best used. Crasher Wake will give you the Fen Badge and TM 55 (Brine), The Fen Badge allows the use of Defog outside of Battle.

Fantina is the Leader of the Fifth gym in Hearthome City, she prefers to use Ghost type pokemon, the only truly effective type is Dark so learn a Dark Type move here, After Defeating Fantina she will give you the Relic Badge and TM 65 (Shadow Claw), The Relic Badge allows you to use the move Surf outside of Battles.

Byron Leads the Sixth Gym in Canalave City and is the Father of Roark (the first gym leader), He is a Proud User of Steel Type Pokemon, Try using Fire Here if you can, After Byron is Defeated you will receive the Mine Badge and TM 91 (Flash Cannon), The Mine Badge lets you use Strength out of battle.

Candice is the Seventh Gym Leader in Sinnoh, She Resides in the Snowy town of Snowpoint, She Uses Ice Type Pokemon (but also uses some other types) here it is best to take a couple of Fire and Psychic type pokemon. When She Gets Defeated she will hand over the Icicle Badge and TM 72 (Avalanche). The Icicle Badge lets you use Rock Climb out of battle.

Volkner is the Eighth and Final Gym Leader in Sinnoh, He Lives in Sunyshore City, and He Likes to Use Electric Type Pokemon but also has a bunch of Diverse Pokemon, Its best to bring your best team to this Gym (it should include a Ground type). When Volkner Admits Defeat he will give you the Beacon Badge and TM 57 (Charge Beam). When you get the Beacon Badge you can use Waterfall out of battle.
