Yep some Pokemon teams use the Weather to be VERY effective. If you come up against one, you better know how to stop it or at least, not get 6-0'd by it!
There are 4 different kinds of Weather Teams. Sandstorm, Rain Dance, Sunny Day and Hail. Each team has at least 1 Pokemon that can cause the Weather to effect. Usually it's a Wall of some kind that is also holding an item that prolongs the amount of turns it lasts for (Damp Rock-Rain Dance, Heat Rock-Sunny Day, Icy Rock-Hail and Smooth Rock-Sandstorm). Although, some Pokemon have abilities that soon as they come into battle, that Weather Condition starts up and not stop till another Weather Condition comes into play (Sand Stream-Sandstorm, Drought-Sunny Day, Drizzle-Rain Dance and Snow Warning-Hail).
Lets go though what you need for a Weather Team.
Building
Well, you need weather to make a Weather team work so you would need to have a Pokemon or 2 that can start using your Weather Condition. Sandstorm and Hail teams are the easiest ones to work with because there are OUs/BLs that have Sand Stream or Snow Warning. Only Ubers have Drizzle and Drought so that makes Weather harder to start up!
Once you have your Weather Pokemon you need a Pokemon that benefits from it. For Sandstorm, a lot of Rock types do and so does Glisor and Garchomp. For Rain Dance, Kingdra or any Pokemon with Swift Swim. For Sunny Day, any Pokemon with Chlorophyll. For Hail, Walrein or Pokemon with Ice Body or Snow Cloak.
Now you would need some good Walls that could use the Weather to their advantage (like Glisor because of Sand Veil) or don't get hurt by the Weather.
When it comes to making movesets, moves that use the weather for power or accuracy. Solarbeam is good for Sunny Day while Thunder is good for Rain Dance.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Makes weaker Pokemon stronger
- Can screw up opponents
- Helps with Item Clause
- Makes gamble moves powerful
Cons
- Might not work and you lose
- Didn't use it properly.
Counters
Mainly it depends on the kind of Weather Team you're facing. If your facing a Hail Team, most likely it would have Ice Types. So use Fire or Rock types. For Sandstorm, Water Ground or Grass. Sunny Day, Water Ground and maybe Ice (For Solarbeam abusers). Rain Dance, Electric and anything that can hit Waters for normal would work.
But for all Weather Teams, other Weather Conditions work.
