Tiers are a very impotent part of Competitive Battling. They tell you what Pokemon are used mostly and what Pokemon are banned from normal play.
Here is a list saying what are the name of the Tiers, a little sentence about the tier and the Name will link to the Tier list.

This is the standard Tier. Most Pokemon you'll battle will be in this Tier. These Pokemon would get destroyed by some Ubers but will destroy UUs.
This Tier is a "leftovers" Tier. These Pokemon would also dominate the UU game but are just outclassed by 1 or 2 Pokemon so they wouldn't last. Pokemon like Flygon are outclassed by Salamence & Garchomp.
These Pokemon either lack movepool or stats to be good for standard play. They can be a surprise for less experienced players.
NU's are the worst of the worst. The only time you'll see these Pokemon is when you play NU.
